West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service have issued a statement following a car fire on the A23.

The service was called yesterday afternoon (September 3) to reports of a vehicle ‘well alight’ on the A23 southbound between Handcross and Slaugham.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area while West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 4.01pm on Tuesday afternoon to reports of a car on fire on the A23 southbound between Handcross and Slaugham.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised fire engines from Crawley and East Grinstead to the scene.

“Upon arrival firefighters found one vehicle well alight and quickly got to work extinguishing the fire with two high pressure hose reels.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area to allow crews to work safely.”
