Emily's chat with prince after her award success

Emily Wright met the Duke of Edinburgh when she attended St James' Palace to receive the DoE scheme's gold award.

She said: "There was a big group of us and he spoke to us as a group, rather than individually.

"He asked us where we did our expedition, whether it was here or abroad.

"It was good going to the palace, but it was a bit scary as well. It was an amazing building inside."

Emily, 19, of Hook Avenue, attended the awards ceremony at the end of about five years of progressing through its bronze, silver and gold levels.

She began as a student at Bognor Regis Community College and is now a customer assistant at a bank in Chichester.

For her gold award, she hiked for four days through Snowdonia in Wales for her expedition.

Her service element saw her help with the Sunday school at St Mary Magdalene Church in South Bersted.

She also went on one of the Sunday school's camps and hikes to fulfil her residential criteria. Learning to drive and salsa dance completed her activities.

"I am glad I did the DoE course. It was a good experience," added Emily.
