Forfars Bakery has closed its shops in Hove, Brighton, Hassocks and Rustington, as well as its bakery headquarters in Newhaven, leaving 40 people without jobs.

Earlier this year, it also closed stores in Horsham and Burgess Hill.

David Oprey, of restructuring and insolvency experts CVR Global, said: “I can confirm that Forfars Bakers Ltd went into liquidation on October 26 and I was appointed Joint Liquidator, with Elias Paourou of this firm.

“The company, which can trace its history back to 1818, has unfortunately had to make all staff redundant at its four shops and its bakery in Newhaven.

“Shareholders have been informed and there will be a creditors meeting next week.

“The company is extremely well-known in the Sussex area and has been a well-loved brand for many years.”

Earlier this year, the business also closed shops in Horsham and Burgess Hill.

It is understood the company’s other stores, including one in Lewes, will remain open under different ownership.
