End to Worthing town centre roadworks

AN £850,000 scheme to improve major roads in Worthing town centre is coming to an end '“ much to the delight of motorists who have endured weeks of road closures, temporary traffic lights and diversions.

The scheme to improve Chapel Road and Marine Parade started last October and has been funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council.

County council cabinet member Derek Whittington said: "Chapel Road and Marine Parade were identified as needing improvement as they had the highest concentration of vulnerable road user accidents in the whole of West Sussex.

"In the last five years, there have been 48 recorded accidents, resulting in 55 casualties.

"Out of those accidents, 37 involved vulnerable road users.

"The county council's engineers are confident this figure should now fall."

Important road

Chapel Road had also been identified as "an important spine road" and it was hoped the improvements would help it meet an aspiration in the Worthing Masterplan to improve the connection between the town's central railway station, the commercial centre and the seafront.

The county council said the work carried out had included widening paths and narrowing roads to create a "safer pedestrian environment", as well as improving carriageways, enhancing pedestrian crossings and improving parking layout.

Public space

Bryan Turner, Worthing cabinet member, said: "The successful towns and cities of the future will be those that provide more public spaces for people.

"This project moves Worthing in that direction."

The works have been regularly inspected and could be in line for a national award, according to Richard Collins from contractors May Gurney Limited.

The final touches were being added this week with the planting of trees in Chapel Road.
