Engineers to carry out sub-strata scanning on Midhurst's incredible sinking road

A '˜substrata' investigation is to be carried out on Rumbolds Hill in Midhurst in a bid to find out exactly what is the cause of the incredible sinking road.

For the sixth time in seven years the busy stretch of the A272 has a series of mysterious depressions running along its centre and theories have ranged from ancient cellars and medieval ditches to banks vaults and underground streams.

County councillor Gordon McAra said engineers were bringing in special machinery to scan the road at night to find out where the cavities lay and calculate how to solve the problem.
