Enrichment Day for local pupils

More than 180 sporting students from secondary schools across East Sussex took part in the county's Physical Education Enrichment Day that took place in Brighton.

They included youngsters from Bexhill High School, St Richards Catholic College and Claverham Community College.

The day was a follow on from last year's event to monitor the progress of the young people who participated last year.

The event was organised by East Sussex County Council's PE and Sports Development Team, in conjunction with a team of secondary school PE teachers and the University of Brighton, as a response to a national initiative to increase support of children who have shown talent for PE and school sports.

The students, many of whom attended last year, took part in a multi-skills and sports programme that included problem solving, team building, creative activities and personal challenges.

Councillor David Elkin, Lead Cabinet Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said: "Last year was the first time we had organised this event and it went extremely well indeed, achieving national recognition. By welcoming back many of the same pupils this year we are able to see the progression made in PE teaching over the last year."

He added: "As well as supporting and encouraging students who are already actively involved with school sports, this event helps us identify more ways to develop a more inclusive approach to teaching PE in schools. It's all about getting more young people enjoying and participating in sports activities."
