Entries Grow

YAPTON Cottage Gardeners' Society's annual show passed the magical 500 for entries on Saturday, although the number of exhibitors, 66, was down on last year.

Difficult growing conditions affected some classes more than others there were some high quality vegetables, but weather damage was evident among the flowers and dahlias were fewer in number.

Fruit growers put together an interesting range of exhibits and fuchsias and pot plants were also well represented.

Successful growers included Crossbush farmer's son Malcolm Paradine, who won the Warmere Cup for the best vegetables, the V. H. Snell Cup for best vegetable collection, the George Harrison Cup for most points by a society member and the Booth Cup for most points in open horticultural classes.

Christine Fry's award-winning run continued with the Stephenson Cup for members' cut flowers, and Littlehampton's Alan Humphrey took the Binns Trophy for best exhibit in the open vegetable classes.

Flower arranging, cookery and handicrafts, wine and beer classes all attracted keen competition.

Running alongside the society's show was the British Gladiolus Society's Sussex Branch show, again hit by the weather, but still providing a spectacular display.
