Crews attend large fire at Chichester tip

Four fire engines are currently dealing with a large fire at a tip in Chichester, the fire service confirmed.

The fire broke out at the Westhampnett tip at 6pm.

A spokesman said the fire involved around 200 tonnes of recycling.

Four fire engines and associated services are currently at the scene.

A West Sussex Fire Service spokesman said on Twitter: “We are currently dealing with a large fire at the Household Waste Recycling Site at Westhampnett near Chichester.

“Smoke is spreading south east so will be visible from the A27.

“Nearby residents should keep doors and windows closed for the time being.”

Resident Lewis Russell said he was on the bus when he saw smoke and got off at the next stop to investigate.

When he saw the fire, he said: “I called 999 which quickly arrived within two minutes after the call.”

He said the fire was ‘not massive’ but still a ‘large fire’.
