Eastbourne ECO Action Network says the ambitious scheme is part of a bid to make the town carbon neutral by 2030.

The group says it wants to ‘turn Eastbourne green’ by at least doubling the current tree cover in town.

It aims to plant thousands of trees on public land, while making it easier for homeowners and businesses to plant them on their own properties.

A spokesperson said, “Trees not only capture carbon emissions but enrich the environment for us all to enjoy.

“Throughout August we will be raising money to fund our tree planting programme.

“We ask the public to help by donating to our crowdfunding campaign before the end of the month.”

East Sussex County Council is offering match-funding to support the project and will double the sum the group raises.

The group says, for example, if they raise £2,500 the county council has agreed to double that up to £5,000 – enough to plant an extra acre of woodland.

Councillor Jonathan Dow, environment member at Eastbourne council, said, “The more we mobilise as a community to address the challenges posed by climate change, the more we will achieve in tackling the greatest ever threat to planet earth.

“I’d like to thank the ECO Action Network for launching this funding initiative and encourage everyone to make a contribution, however big or small.

“If you can make a donation you can consider it an investment in the wellbeing of future generations of your own family – what can be better than that?”

The money raised through the campaign will pay for:

• Buying and growing trees, seeds and saplings

• Setting up tree nurseries

• Tree planting, watering and maintenance

• A marketing campaign targeting planting on privately-owned land.
