While pier owner Abid Gulzar has obtained planning permission from Eastbourne council for two new units similar to the existing Victorian Tea Rooms in the open deck area – as well as two kiosks as a like for like replacement to the previous kiosks lost in the July 2014 fire – concerns have been raised by conservationists and council officers.

And this week an Eastbourne council spokesperson confirmed an investigation is underway concerning the two new kiosk structures.

The spokesperson said, “We are in regular contact with representatives of the pier about the need to secure necessary consents and permission, in order to ensure that the town’s seafront heritage is not materially harmed.

“We are also liaising with Historic England on this matter and all parties share a desire to keep the pier open and trading in a viable manner.”

Mr Gulzar has been contacted for a comment.
