Extinction Rebellion Lewes mark World Oceans Day on Seaford beach – in pictures

Wearing masks, the group started the day on Sunday (June 7), with a beach clean in a bid to remove plastic. World Oceans Day is held annually on June 8, and celebrates the role of the oceans in our everyday lives and inspires action to protect the ocean. “Our plastic has now reached the arctic,” said Oliver and William from Seaford. “If we continue ‘business as usual’, by 2050 plastic will outweigh fish in the sea.” Guy Gladstone said: “Recent news from Russia of its second largest ever ocean oil spill caused by permafrost melt inside the Arctic Circle was the prompt for my placard. More than 50 per cent of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the ocean. We destroy it at our peril!” Extinction Rebellion Lewes has gathered on the seafront at a safe distance four times in the past month to highlight the need for a green recovery from Covid-19. Their message is that we can all keep alert and ensure that our economy grows back in harmony with the environment that we rely on.
