Find out about beach minibeasts

An insect talk and walk is to be held on Sunday at the Harbour Club and at the Shoreham Beach Local 
Nature Reserve.

For beginners and suitable for all ages, the event will be part of celebrations taking place across the country for National Insect Week, which runs until Sunday.

Shoreham Beach Local Nature Reserve education co-ordinator Stephen Savage said: “Most beaches provide few opportunities for insects, but the rare shingle plant habitat on Shoreham Beach provides a home to many types of insect including bees, butterflies, beetles and grasshoppers. Many of these insects also provide valuable pollinating services to the shingle plants and are important for their health”.

The event will begin at the Harbour Club at 10.30am, where Stephen will present an illustrated talk outlining insects’ importance to the vegetated shingle beach habitat. It will be followed by an exploration of the beach habitat to see what insects can be found and identified. The event will end at 1.30pm.

This insect event is part of a series of events to mark the ten-year anniversary of the nature reserve, along with the annual programme of events run by Friends of Shoreham Beach. For more information, log on to the website www.fosbeach.com
