The ‘Beachy Head Birder’ (@BEACHYBIRDER) was out this morning (Wednesday, August 17) when he spotted a large group of grey seals just off the coast opposite the RAF Bomber Command Memorial in Beachy Head Road.

He said: “I occasionally see one or two max in that spot but 20 is the most I’ve heard of there.”

Thea Taylor, project lead at the Sussex Dolphin Project, said: “This appears to be a mixed group of male and female grey seals. It is really unusual to see so many hauled out together in this area.

“August is the start of pupping season in Cornwall but that is the nearest breeding colony other than Norfolk for grey seals so it is unlikely they have congregated here to breed.

“We would urge all visitors to the area to give the seals plenty of space and not approach them.”
