Are you still trying to decide what to buy as a Christmas present this year?
Peter Thurman, of the Lewes Arboretum Group, is urging people to choose to give a tree because more need to be planted. Not a Christmas tree for the home to be covered in baubles but a proper, permanent tree for the garden.
Decent garden and plant centres stock ornamental and fruiting trees, said Peter, and by getting one you would be doing your bit for the environment.
Purchasers will need to think about ultimate size and site conditions – soil type and exposure to wind. But there is a tree for every situation.
Care is essential for the first three years after planting because, shockingly, between 40 and 60 per cent of trees in the UK die within two years of planting.
