Mobile Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) events in Henfield, Pulborough, Steyning and Storrington will be run in all four locations again.

The past eight events have collected the equivalent weight of nine small cars – 18.12 tonnes – with the latest event at Storrington having collected the equivalent weight of nearly two small cars – 3.66 tonnes – which is the highest yet.

The scheme has been run by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Viridor and Horsham District Council in order to further encourage recycling of small WEEE items and to provide a more localised service in rural communities.

Graeme MacPherson, Head of Waste Services at West Sussex County Council, said: “The trial in the Chantonbury area has been promising, so I am pleased to announce that we have decided to continue with these events until the end of the year to see how they progress.

“We will make a decision on their long-term future in the Autumn, when we will let stakeholders and residents know of our intentions.

“We would encourage residents to think twice before putting WEEE into their waste bins and to consider if they can reuse it and if not to take it to be recycled.”

The WEEE service can accept large electrical appliances such as washing machines and cookers, fridges and freezers, display equipment such as TVs, laptops and personal computers, fluorescent tubes, small electrical appliances such as hairdryers and batteries.

For any items that can’t be accepted, the nearest household waste recycling sites are at Hopoast, Worthing Road, Horsham RH13 0AR, at Brighton Road, Shoreham BN43 6RJ or at Newbridge Road, Billingshurst, RH14 9HY.

Alternatively you can contact Horsham District Council, which offers a chargeable bulky household collection service. For more details visit the website or telephone 01403 733144.
