New rules on pavement repairs a welcome initiative in Lewes

Lewes councillor Ruth O’Keeffe has welcomed new rules governing streetworks in East Sussex.

A permit scheme has been introduced for utility companies, with fines for infringements of conditions.

It follows a much-criticised temporary repair to the pavement in Western Road, Lewes, after underground cable work.

Cllr O’Keeffe said: “Unfortunately everyone can give examples of bad pavement repairs. The repair at Western Road, which thankfully has now been confirmed as temporary, to be made good with proper paving, was one of the more extreme examples I have seen.

“I very much hope that the new arrangements with licences for utility companies to undertake works, and being held to account via more frequent inspection and the application of fines for failing to meet agreed standards, will improve things considerably, and I welcome this as a much-needed initiative.”
