The incident occurred on a stretch of promenada near the mouth of the river on Sunday afternoon, with hydraulic oil coming from a vehicle operated by Biffa waste management.

The Biffa vehicle, contracted by Arun District Council, had been emptying bins along the promenade when the oil spilled, and Biffa employees quickly put down granules to soak it up.

While most of the oil is thought to have been dealt with, a member of the public reported that there was still oil at the site earlier today.

Amanda Harding, communications officer at Arun District Council, said: “The areas affected are in the process of being cleaned and that cleaning operation will continue until Arun District Council and our contractors, Biffa, are satisfied that the spill has been dealt with.”

Ms Harding confirmed that Biffa carries out regular safety checks on its vehicles, as legally required, and that no lasting damage to wildlife was done.

“This was an accident and the contractors followed procedure after it had occurred”, she said.

“Arun District Council will continue to work with the contractors to minimalise the risk of incidents like this occurring in the future.”
