Parish councillor Peter Berry (known on the ballot paper as Baron Von Thunderclap of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party) said he had found the safe in Colwood Lane, not far from his home.

He said the village had suffered from fly tipping problems in the past.

“Now the fly tippers have been back, with a metal safe,” he said. “They’ve dumped it in the road, causing quite a traffic hazard.”

The safe, which at some point had had its door removed, was painted white and had what looked like engine parts in it.

A statement from Sussex Police said: “At 10.14am on Tuesday (16 June) an old 3ft square safe with no door and with some loose engine pieces inside it was found dumped in the middle of Colwood Lane, near Bolney.

“The local authority were asked to arrange its removal There is nothing to suggest it has been involved in any crime.”
