Southern Water to allow drip irrigation

DRIP irrigation will be allowed by Southern Water, relieving the strain on some gardeners during periods of water restrictions, according to the Horticultural Trades Association.

Earlier this week Southern Water and six other water companies announced hosepipe bans and other water restrictions starting on April 5.

Tim Briercliffe, HTA director of business development, said: “We are delighted that Southern Water have joined Anglian, Thames and South East Water in allowing the use of drip irrigation by gardeners during the temporary hosepipe bans. It is great news for gardeners and the garden industry and a major step forward from 2006 when both were severely impacted by blanket hosepipe bans. For consistency of message and to help embed long term water efficiency in the minds of the nation’s gardeners we would urge the remaining water companies to follow suit.”
