Spider 'parachute squad' shines on by Richard Williamson

Will you just look at this remarkable picture I took last week over the football field on the edge of Petworth Park.

This gleaming silver shine on the grass is not dew or rainwater reflecting the afternoon sunshine but a perfect host of little spiders in their millions all trying to become airborne and escape Petworth and emigrate to pastures new. They do not seem to have had much luck.

The gossamer parachutes have not risen up into the sky on warm air as they should, but are laid flat on the ground and all become entangled.

Not that the little beasties are going to mind because in this case the field seems a fairly safe place to live.
