As the water crisis continues in Hailsham tonight, more locations for people to get bottled water have been announced.
Lorries of bottled water are parked up at Pevensey Castle Car Park and Polegate Railway Station and while supplies at Hailsham ran out earlier, it is expected that more will arrive at 9.30pm.
In the latest update from South East Water, the water firm says the majority of customers in Eastbourne, Pevensey and the surrounding areas should get their water back within the next hour.
Much of Hailsham, Polegate, parts of Willingdon, Pevensey and Sovereign Harbour have been without water for most of the day after a 30 inch diameter cast iron water main burst this morning at Diplocks roundabout.
The A22 has been shut and there have been traffic problems in Hailsham and police have also been called in to deal with the incident.
The Sussex 4x4 Response organisation has also been out helping people.
Steve Andrews, Head of Service Management at South East Water, said, “We are sorry to customers that have been affected by water problems in Hailsham, Polegate, Eastbourne and surrounding areas.
“Customers in Hailsham are still experiencing no water but other areas affected will start seeing their water returning in the next hour.
“This is a very complex repair to one of our largest water mains (30 inches diameter – this is the width of an internal door). Our teams have been working on the incident since early this morning.
“As the burst caused the area around the pipe to flood, we have had to pump all the water away from the site so that our teams can work on the repair.
“We are isolating the section of pipe that has burst and redirecting water around other parts of our network.
“We’ll continue to keep our customers up to date on our website at www.southeastwater.co.uk and on Twitter (@SEWaterUK). In the meantime, bottled water is available for customers in designated areas and further information can be found on our website.“
