Williamson's Weekly Nature Notes

SONG thrushes started singing again on January 18. We are 400 feet above sea level so ours are later than birds on the plain.

It is the most cheerful of all songs, though repetitive.

Thrush in Old English was 'thrysce' which seems to me to be thrice.

Robert Browning said: "That's the wise thrush: he sings each note twice over, lest you should think he never could recapture that first fine careless rapture."

But I have even heard the same notes four times over. It does not make for monotony.

The pipes of this bird are too bright and clear. And he'll chirrup away in the rain, when we're all feeling miserable. He wets his whistle with succulent snails.
