A community store in Etchingham has won a top award.
The Etchingham Shop and Deli in the High Street has won the Start-Up category in the South East’s Rural Oscars, the 2012 Countryside Alliance Awards. The shop will now go through to the UK and Ireland final in Parliament in March.
The grand opening of the new Etchingham Shop and Deli was on May 31 last year in time for the Jubilee weekend. A community initiative, it was created by the Community Interest Company working with the Parsih Council to bring the business into being.
Residents were consulted so their needs could be met by the shop which stocks a wide array of local produce, does ‘take out Thursday,’ has a kids’ corner for sweets and small toys; sells firewood, newspapers and offers dry-cleaning services in conjunction with a local business.
Judges say: “It’s difficult to open a shop in a community that has lost one, as in this case, so we are delighted to see this enthusiastic role model for villages everywhere.”
