On Saturday February 25 fantastic weather greeted village residents when Etchingham Improvements Committee held the Jubilee Wood planting event in the Croft Field, and villagers planted 450 trees to create the Jubilee Wood.

In a marked contrast, rain arrived just in time for a gathering of residents met in the Croft field to witness the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, and Gregory Barker MP carry out the ceremony to plant the ‘Royal Oak’ in the centre of the wood. The Royal Oak sapling has been raised from seed collected from a Royal estate. After the planting the Improvements Committee, Parish Council and invited guests made their way to the station Bistro where they were treated to drinks and canapés by landowners Christopher and Christine Ahrens. All of my pictures were uploaded full size, so if you select ‘Original’ you will get the best resolution available, Frank needed to slightly reduce the file size before uploading, so if you find the best available is not good enough, contact Frank and he can email the original to you.

As there are several events already planned in the village to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, I have set up a group on Flickr where anyone can add pictures taken at any of the village Jubilee events, anyone can view the pictures, but you need to join Flickr to add images. If you already use Flickr, just upload the pictures to your space on Flickr and then add them to the group. If you do not use Flickr, it is a very easy sign up process and the initial free account gives you space for 200 images, you only need to pay if you want to upload more pictures. If you have pictures that you would like to add, but for any reason would prefer not to join Flickr, if you email the pictures to me and I will upload them for you, you will of course be credited as the owner of the images. A number of events have already been planned for the Diamond Jubilee weekend, Saturday June 2, Medieval Feast in the Church (see below), and Village Tea Party and Village Photo & Gift of commemorative mugs in Queen’s Garden. Monday June 4, Jubilee Fete in the Lambing Field and Live Music and bar, also in the Lambing Field.

The Fete replaces the Summer Fete which is normally held in July, and will be in the Lambing field instead of Queen’s Garden. Full details will appear here nearer the date, along with details of any other events that may be added to the weekend.

Book the date, June 2, 2012, for a journey back to the 14th century and enjoy a Medieval Feast to celebrate the 650th anniversary of Sir William de Etchingham’s Church. Look out for posters in the village and more details here nearer the time.

Church services, in March Sunday services will be at the normal time of 11am, the Family service will be a week later than usual on the 3rd Sunday, March 18, which is Mothering Sunday.

A reminder that the Church is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 11am to 4pm, for visitors and parishioners.

Get information for this column to me as soon as possible, if you have a diary of events planned for the year let me have the dates and I will put in a list of village events for the year so that people can put the dates in their diaries. There are several ways to get your info to me, but email is preferred because there is less chance of errors during copying. I need information by 10pm on Monday to be sure it will be in time for inclusion, I can sometimes add extra items on Tuesday morning, but this cannot be guaranteed.
