EU cash boost for jobless

A £350,000 grant will be used to help the long-term unemployed find work and training in Newhaven.

The money, from the European Social Fund, will be used to fund the Newhaven Community Employment Partnership (NewCEP), Summerhayes Resource Centre and the Newhaven Childcare Initiative.

Although NewCEP targets its help at the over 55's, under 25's, mothers returning to work, the long-term unemployed and the disabled, any person out of work can seek help.

NewCEP employment co-ordinator Amber Wells said: 'A number of local firms have had difficulties recruiting and retraining staff. However, there are many long-term unemployed who with the right help and training can be a useful and loyal addition to the workforce.

'We partner local businesses and provide a free, professional service, matching their needs with the needs of those wishing to return to work.'

Since the project started 18 months ago it has helped nearly 500 people and more than 200 have found work. Support is offered on a one-to-one basis, including advice on completing application forms and help with confidence building.

NewCEP is based at the Hillcrest Centre, Hillcrest Road, Newhaven, and can be contacted on 01273 612539.
