Even more homes announced for West Sussex

A MAJOR risk to the economy and environment in West Sussex has been predicted following the release of new housing figures on Thursday, which bring even higher numbers to the county.

Proposed government changes to the South East Plan claim that 74,600 homes should be built in West Sussex by 2026. This compares with 64,100 recommended by an independent panel that carried out an inquiry into the South East Plan, the draft of which contained proposals for 58,000 homes.

The two areas hit by latest figures are Mid Sussex, which gets an additional 2,000 homes on top of previous allocations, and 10,000 which are to be built in the Shoreham Harbour 'growth point' area.

The figures have been described as 'challenging and difficult' by county council leader Henry Smith.
