Uckfield Mayor cllr Ian Smith joined the town’s Tennis Working Group members, Alan Whittaker, Jeremy Hallett and Paul Sparks, to launch the tennis court improvement project at the Victoria Pleasure Ground last week.

Money for the project was provided by the Town Council, the Lawn Tennis Association and Tennis Sussex.

Construction will take about six weeks and there will be a further waiting period to allow the natural oils in the Tarmac to dry out.

Separately, the team at Urban Tennis Foundation, Tim Cottingham, Dan Elson, and Simon Trott, are busy designing and building the website booking system, along with a coaching plan for 2015.

By early February people will be able to buy key fobs via the website and start enjoying the new courts.

In late March, when the weather improves, the contractor will finish the courts with a two-tone green non-slip paint finish.

A formal opening will take place in May.

While under construction, the tennis court area will be fenced off for public safety.

Cllr Smith said: “I am delighted to launch the improvement of tennis provision in Uckfield.

“This is a positive step forward for the town and all who use Victoria Pleasure Ground both now and in the future.”

Deputy Mayor and Group member Jeremy Hallett said: “This facility will bring an exciting new sporting opportunity to our town which I am pleased to be part of.”
