Ewhurst Green, Cripps Corner and Staplecross village voice

The bridge works on Junction Road were completed on Saturday and the road is now open to traffic travelling to Hawkhurst and onwards to Maidstone.

There is a sponsored bike ride on Sunday (May 27) organised by the Ewhurst and Staplecross Bonfire Society. The meeting place is at River Brede Farm, Winchelsea Beach at 10am. Sponsor forms are available on the website www.esbs.org.uk and with, dare I say, a fine weekend this is a good event for family and friends to go along and raise money for the society as well as having a good time. You should take along your barbeque food and drink.

A word of warning to supermarket shoppers. A customer did not realise her handbag had been accessed and her purse removed until she reached the checkout. She believed she had made her bag secure between the trolley boxes. The purse was later recovered, minus her cash, in another supermarket car park. It would seem this is a common problem for shoppers in supermarkets and you are recommended to keep a firm hold on your handbag at all times.

There was a large audience last week for the monthly meeting of the Garden Society, when Kevin Tooher’s talk was on his great love of clematis. He had a variety of photographs to show some of the many blooms with plenty of advice on ideal sites for this popular plant, as well as measures to take to combat the unpopular insects that feast on these plants.

Chairman Pam Underhill asked members to support the Rose Show to be held on Saturday June 9 in the village hall. The constant rain in recent weeks was playing havoc with plants but the current sunshine may bring on the blooms in time for this popular show.

Hilary Ganly, whose painting classes are a popular venue on Thursday mornings in the village hall, is holding another Watercolour Workshop on Saturday, June 9, in St Mark’s Church Room in Staplecross. The theme this time is flower painting and Hilary will teach you the basic skills to enable you to go home with your masterpiece to impress your family. There are limited places and you should ring by contacting Hilary on 01580-830704 to book a place. The cost is £40 for the day lasting from 10am until 4pm.
