Ewhurst Green, Cripps Corner and Staplecross village voice

This evening is the start of the Staplecross and Hollington Art Groups’annual Exhibition at Staplecross village hall to be held over the weekend. The preview starts tonight 7-9pm; Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22 both days10am-4pm.

Staplecross Bowls Club will be holding its Open Day tomorrow at the Club house in Northiam Road, Staplecross and it is an opportunity for anyone, who would like to play bowls, to go along and meet the members. Staplecross Bowls Club is a very friendly club with excellent facilities and holds a variety of social events throughout the year. New members, whether they can already play, or wish to learn, are very welcome.

During Saturday morning the Jubilee trees will be planted – the rowan near the village hall and the oak on the Herdman Field in Ewhurst. To date only two “diamonds” have come forward one a birthday and the other a wedding anniversary and they will be participating in the planting.

Tomorrow evening the Bowls Club will be joining forces with Staplecross and Ewhurst Bonfire Society to hold a Race Night at the Staplecross Club in Northiam Road at 7.30pm. Admission is free, but a light supper (pre-booked) will be available for £3.

Households in the Parish will now have received the annual report 2011-12 with the agenda for the Annual Parish Assembly. This is a meeting for all in the parish to attend to hear what has been done on our behalf in the past year. It is also an opportunity to meet and talk to County, District and Parish councillors and raise items of concern from 6.45pm prior to the start of the meeting at 7.15pm. There will be a presentation on tackling wildlife crime by Chief Inspector Martin Sims of Sussex police. There will be stalls of local groups showing the many activities on offer in the parish as well as refreshments.

Parish councillor Jacqui Hyett is again trying to get support for a yoga group in the village and has received funding from Age UK, Fit as a Fiddle and the Big Lottery for eight free classes to be held at the village hall 5.30-7pm starting on Thursday May 3. The class is to suit all abilities, including relaxation and breathing techniques to promote a healthier life style under the tuition of a British Wheel of Yoga accredited teacher. The long-awaited replacement of the ageing pavilion in the Herdman Field which has done sterling service over the years for the lads of Ewhurst United Football Club, kicks into action when next week the building will be taken down. Following that the ground works will be underway ready for the new building later in the year. Fundraising has been carried out to good effect and Rother District Council has now offered £17,500 towards the project.

Those who enjoy a quiz may well be interested in one to be held at The Cross Inn on Friday May 4, when locally run charity BACE (Building and Assisting Communities with Education) hope to raise much needed funds for a well at a nursery school in The Gambia.
