Ewhurst Green, Cripps Corner, and Staplecross village voice

Staplecross Bowls Club will be holding a coffee morning in the Club House in Northiam Road tomorrow (Saturday) at 10.30am with an Open Day next on Saturday (April 21).

Both these events are an opportunity for anyone, who would like to play bowls, to go along and meet the members. Staplecross Bowls Club is a very friendly club with excellent facilities and holds a variety of social events throughout the year. New members, whether they can already play, or wish to learn, are very welcome.

Also on April 21, the club will be joining forces with Staplecross and Ewhurst Bonfire Society to hold a Race Night at the Staplecross Club in Northiam Road at 7.30pm. Admission is free, but a light supper will be available for £3.

Brian Scowen (01580 830570) or Terry Rogers (01424 850524) are happy to give more details.

Staplecross and Hollington Art Groups will be holding their annual Art Exhibition at Staplecross village hall. It will be held over the weekend of Friday April 20, 7-9pm, Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22 10am-4pm.

This popular exhibition is one not to be missed. Now in its twelfth year, organiser and tutor Hilary Ganly said, “We didn’t have a show last year which hopefully means this one will be better than ever. Both groups have been working hard over the last twelve months and will have a wide variety of different forms of art on show, as well as for sale. If you’ve been to our show before, you will know it is one not to be missed.”

Staplecross Art Group meets in the village hall every Thursday 10-12.30pm. Hollington Art Group meets every Wednesday in the Parish Rooms, Wishing Tree Road, 9.30-12noon. There are also various one-day workshops throughout the year. If you are interested in joining either group, ring Hilary on 01580-830704.

Following damage at Staplecross playing field with graffiti on the underside of the tower slide steps, as well as two holes dug near the roadside, the police are investigating and would like to hear if anyone knows the identity of the culprits.

A 6’2” male with ginger hair and two accomplices used a fake £20 note in the village shop, having previously tried in the pub. There is a part registration vehicle number of LXW on a white van; again anyone with knowledge of these offenders should contact the police.

The police have also issued a warning of a blue van W382 DVW to look out for. Please notify police immediately if you see it.

Parish councillor Jacqui Hyett is again trying to get support for a yoga group in the village and has received funding from Age UK, Fit as a Fiddle and the Big Lottery for eight free classes to be held at the village hall 5.30-7pm starting on Thursday May 3. The class is to suit all abilities, including relaxation and breathing techniques to promote a healthier life style under the tuition of a British Wheel of Yoga accredited teacher. For further information call 830576 or 830288.

The monthly Luncheon Club meets at 12.30pm on Wednesday (April 18) in the village hall.

Were you born between February 6 1952 and June 2 1953 or were you married during those two dates? If so, and you live in Cripps Corner, Ewhurst Green, or Staplecross (i.e the Parish of Ewhurst) Councillor Maggie Whitaker (telephone 830041) would like to hear from you, as you are all “diamonds”. To celebrate the Jubilee Year, the Parish Council has purchased two trees to commemorate the occasion and would like these parish diamonds to attend the plantings, one at the Herdman Field and the other in Staplecross. To date only one person has contacted Maggie – surely there must be more, otherwise Pauline will be planting on her own!

Have you remembered that those who use the Junction Road particularly between Cripps Corner as far as The Curlew that bridge repairs are scheduled to start on Tuesday April 10 until May 18 and the road will therefore be closed with diversions in operation. The work to be carried out is at Udiam where the Hammer Ditch bridge is to be refurbished and there will be temporary road closure for 60 metres either side of the bridge. This is a long window for the repair but Parish Council chairman David Young suspects that this length of time is to allow for contingencies and providing all goes to plan the closure may not be so long. Further information relating to this work may be obtained by telephoning 0345-6080193.
