EX-MAYOR CHAINS HIMSELF TO HEALTH HQ

IN an 'act of desperation' former Worthing mayor Tom Wye chained himself to the doors of the Primary Care Trust building in The Causeway, Goring, yesterday morning.

Major Wye and fellow protesters from KWASH chained themselves to the doors of the building in a peaceful demonstration over the possible downgrading of Worthing and South-lands Hospitals.

The front of the building was plastered with KWASH (Keep Worthing and Southlands Hospitals) posters and Princess Royal Hospital stickers.

Major Wye said the demonstration was a wake-up call for Worthing, saying: "Two of the three options see your hospital downgraded.

"We are at a loss. We have been speaking to them (the PCT] over the last year and they are not listening."

He said the demonstration was to highlight to the people of Worthing that their hospital was under a real threat. "We have to wake up and let the PCT know what we think of their proposals. They have earmarked 1million for the consultation; we would like to have a fraction of that money to get our message across."
