FINAL arrangements for Uckfield’s twinning with Northern French town Arques-la-Bataille were drawn up at the AGM of the Uckfield and District Twinning Association have now been drawn up.
Activities with Uckfield’s new partner town have continued to flourish over the last year.
The town’s French friends loved their sunny walk on the Ashdown Forest and their visits to the Brighton Festival last year, while Uckfield residents who took the ferry from Newhaven were amazed by the spectacular displays at the Dieppe Kite Festival.
Arques lies in a picturesque valley just a few kilometres from Dieppe and this closeness coupled with warm French hospitality has greatly contributed to the success of the twinning.
Meanwhile friendships have been firmly cemented by young people. Uckfield teenagers enjoyed their French welcome so much at the water sports course held in Arques last August that they invited the Arques youngsters back for a joint Anglo-French camp at Blackboys Youth Hostel next month.
The English youngsters have been busy planning a programme that includes adventure activities at Blacklands Farm, a stone carving workshop and an evening barbecue.
The signing of the twinning Charter will take place in The Civic Centre on June 11. Both the youth and the adult activities are open to anyone in Uckfield and we would welcome enquiries from anyone who wants to join in.
The AGM will be held in the offices of Rix and Kay, behind Carvills on the High Street and will be followed by a wine and cheese lunch to which everyone is welcome.
