Exercise programme returns

NEW funding means a Westergate sports centre will reinstate its GP exercise referral programme from this month.

The Six Villages Sports Centre ran a successful GP referral scheme for many years but it stopped in 2010 as there were insufficient funds to keep it going.

Now its operating company Freedom Leisure have offered the funding plus fully-trained staff to the centre.

This means people will once again have the chance to improve their health at the centre.

Manager Simon Wagstaff said: “I’m delighted to see the GP referral scheme return to Six Villages Sports Centre with the help of Freedom Leisure’s funding.

“The scheme proved very worthwhile before and I’m sure it will do so once again as we work in partnership with local GPs to improve the health and wellbeing of our local community.”

GPs can refer patients where their health could be dramatically improved through exercise.

This could include those who are overweight, suffer a heart condition, have high or low blood pressure, arthritis or diabetes.

Patients seeking to restore their mobility after surgery are also welcome on the programme.

Referred clients pay £15 for an initial assessment before taking part in 20 gym or exercise sessions over 10 weeks.

They will also receive professional advice and guidance from qualified trainers to ensure their fitness levels and rehabilitation progress carefully and successfully.

The GP referral scheme sessions started on Monday.

They will run each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am- 2pm.

To be eligible you must be referred by your GP.
