The car park improvement works, which started last week, will be carried out in phases to keep as many parking spaces as possible available, Mid Sussex District Council said.

The work is not expected to cause any disruption to motorists and the new car park will be finished in around five weeks.

Haywards Heath is also set for a car park extension as work will soon be starting to extend The Orchards car park by 34 spaces.

Work will start on Monday January 25 and is expected to last up to eight weeks and a temporary entrance will be set up closer to the shopping centre.

The council said every effort will be made to keep any disruption to a minimum but there will be a short-term loss of a small number of cycle spaces and car parking bays while the work is carried out.

The vast majority of spaces will be available in The Orchards car park while the extension works take place but, if The Orchards does become full, alternative car parks are available in Haywards Heath at the following locations:

Hazelgrove Road

Heath Road

Gower Road

Franklynn Road

Haywards East, Haywards Road

Haywards West, Haywards Road
