Expert to help with decision on Aldwick flats

Expert highways advice is being sought before councillors decide if an Aldwick house should be replaced by ten flats.

A consultant is being called in by Arun District Council to examine conditions in Dark Lane.

The road leads to Moonrakers which Mr and Mrs J Bristow want to demolish in order to build an art deco-style two-and-a-half storey-high apartment block with ten flats.

The decision to seek an independent opinion came after the council's development control committee members questioned the comments from county council officers.

They said the county's observation that Dark Lane was wide enough to allow overtaking was contrary to their findings on a recent site visit.

They wanted to know if their views were supported by an impartial individual before they decided Mr and Mrs Bristow's plans.

Aldwick parish councillor John Bunderla-Davis said Dark Lane was unsuitable to cope with the 40 extra vehicles a day expected to be generated by the proposed flats.

It was a popular pedestrian route to the beach.

Philippa Owen, secretary of the Strange Gardens estate management company, said its members had three concerns about the proposed development.

These were its impact on beach users, its effect on the neighbourhood and the precedent it would set for future development.

Gill Brown, Arun's leader and a councillor for Aldwick East, said: "This development is totally out of character.

"I can't see how it's going to make a positive contribution or enhance what is an area of special character by having ten flats instead of one house."
