Neil Hunter, of Irvine Road, lives just metres away from the building.

He was woken up by the sound of the explosion.

The 41-year-old said: “My whole house shock with the force.

“There was just an almighty bang that shock the windows and tiles on my house. It was incredible.

“I ran outside and I could see flames licking up the side of the building.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed reports of the explosion but the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

A spokeswoman said some nearby residents were advised to leave their homes initially but had now returned.

No-one is believed to have been injured in the fire.
