Facilities boost planned for West Ashling village green

An attempt to rejuvenate an unused park in a village near Chichester could be launched by a parish council after a multi-thousand pound project failed to attract interest.

The pavilion in the Dell village green has been largely ignored since it was constructed last year in the hopes that a local football team would use the facilties.

On Wednesday, Funtington Parish Council agreed to seek cost estimates for additional amenities at the building, in a bid to make it attractive to other users.

Chairman Geoffrey Keech said the pavilion in the Dell had been of concern to the council for some time.

“It was put up about a year ago, but it has been effectively used for nothing much because the local football team who were going to use it never materialised,” he said.

“It is a matter of some urgency that we get electricity there and drainage and water.”

Funding for the facilities could come from the council precept or grants, although Cllr Keech stressed that the precept would already be needed for work on the village hall.

But resident Mick Dunnett believes the project is a waste of money as the green is too small to be of use.

He added that the original project had already cost £11,000 to construct through a new homes bonus grant.

He said: “It’s completely unjustified. Most of the people in the area just think it’s hilarious, but I don’t think it’s hilarious because it’s my taxes.”
