Facts around seafront murder still a mystery

A passer-by found Marek Pudlowski slumped on a bench in Waterloo Square on August 3 and called police, sparking a major investigation.

After he was found to have severe bruising to his upper body, the Sussex Police Major Crime Branch immediately launched a murder enquiry to help track down the 51-year-old's killer.

Since then, numerous people have come forward to help with the enquiry, this week prompting the police to issue a thank you to the Polish and Eastern European communities for their assistance in the investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Johns, who is leading Operation Langton, said: "We have received a lot of support from members of the public within these communities, for which we are extremely grateful.

"We have done all we can to forge and develop relationships and this has paid off as we have had a number of lines of enquiry to follow up.

"However, at this time, we are no closer to catching the person who is responsible for Mr Pudlowski's death.

"We just need that one significant piece of information which will enable us to piece the case together and find out exactly what happened on the morning of August 3."

CCTV footage, which was released shortly after the murder, shows Mr Pudlowski at a local bank in Bognor the morning he died.

He appears to be in discomfort and pain and police believe he had already been attacked at that stage.

Mr Pudlowski's family travelled to England a week after his death and his daughter, Agniezka Pudlowska, made a recorded appeal for witnesses and information.

It has been shown in drop-in centres and shops frequented by the Polish community, in both English and Polish.

"This enquiry is as active now as it was when it was launched," said DCI Steve Johns. "There is a team of detectives who are working full-time on this case, following up leads and investigating any new lines of enquiry that come in to us.

"We are determined to catch whoever did this to Marek and would urge the public, once again, to come forward and speak to us if they think they have information. It may seem something small and insignificant, but it could be the key to what we are looking for."

Mr Pudlowski, of Bassett Road, originated from Szklarska Poerba in Poland. He had been in the UK for between two and four years.

He had worked in seasonal jobs and for several employment agencies,

but was not working at the time of his death.
