Fairlight

Parish Council: Cllr the Rev. Val Gibbs has been re-elected as Chair of the entirely secular Parish Council for the next twelve months. Please get in touch with Val, the clerk, or any Parish Councillor if you think they can help with any problem. Councillors' contact details are on the noticeboards and on the village website at www.fairlight.org.uk.

Cricket: Parkhurst Cricket Club would like to use Wood Field Recreation Ground for their home matches, starting as soon as possible. Parish Councillors are receptive to the idea, subject to practical matters being sorted out. The field will remain open to the general public. It has been many years since the click of leather on willow was heard in Fairlight, except for a bored man kicking a tree.

The Cove Pub and Restaurant: Parish Councillors are to apply to Rother District Council to have The Cove registered as a Community Asset. That would give local people a right to bid (not necessarily to buy) The Cove should it ever be intended to be sold for some other use. The legislation enabling this is relevantly recent, but it has been widely used around the country. The Cove, I’m happy to say, is fully open for business.

Village Hall Fayre: This Saturday, 4 June, it’s the Village Hall Summer Fayre at the Village Hall (where else?). The popular event runs from 12 noon to 3.00 pm, with hot lunches from 12 noon.

Queen’s Birthday Weekend: Two major events over the weekend 11 and 12 June.

Over both days there will be the Fairlight Open Gardens from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Seventeen gardens will be open to the public for just £5. Tickets from the Post Office or at any garden on the day. Profits go to the Fairlight Preservation Trust to help save our homes from the sea.

On Saturday 11 June there is a Street Party in The Broadway by the Village Hall. This is free (but bring your own food to share and a chair of your own). Thanks to the Parish Council for organising this and thanks to Rother District Council for the very useful grant. The Broadway will be closed to traffic for the duration of the party.

Grass Verges: By the time you read this the grass opposite the Post Office ought to have been cut by the Parish Council contractors. At least one cut was missed due to the Southern Water roadworks. More generally some verges outside private houses are looking very overgrown. The County Council, whose job this is, provides only a very basic service, which is not sufficient while the grass is growing strongly. Residents are encouraged, nay exhorted, to cut the area outside their own homes while the mower is out. County does not discourage this practice. The Gardening Club is doing so much good work with the flower tubs and Circle roundabout – let’s keep the rest of the village looking good too.

Residents’ Association: The long established and well-supported Fairlight Residents’ Association – in terms of membership numbers at least – is looking for a Secretary and for an editor of the quarterly magazine “Fairlight News”. There is room for committee members too. If you are interested ring Mary on 813031 or Trevor on 812340 for further details. Surely editing the “News” is one of the plumb jobs in Fairlight?

MOPPs: Today Heather Goodsell will be giving a talk entitled “Hedgerows and Herbs” and there is a changed menu of Fish & Chips followed by Fruit Crumble. Next week 10th June ever popular Keith Osborne will be entertaining the members with his ‘Music for Health’ and lunch will be Sausage Casserole and Banoffee Pie. It’s also toe-nail cutting week with the lovely Nicola so don’t forget your clippers!

Tailpiece: After an eight week sabbatical, I shall be back in person behind the Fairlight Village Voice from next Friday. Please let me have anything you may wish to see publicised in our excellent Rye Observer, and I’ll try to ensure it gets in. [email protected] will find me. A note about my missing eight weeks will appear next Friday, June 10.
