Next Friday, May 6 there will be a Produce Day with all sorts of goodies on sale so don’t forget your purses! There is also Bingo, a Star Prize in the Raffle and luncheon of Fish Pie with Pavlova for afters. Yum-Yum, and all for a fiver!

Lutman Award: Until Monday 2 May you can still nominate a worthy person to receive the John Lutman Award for Community Service. The winner will be awarded £150 to go to a good cause of his or her choice. Nomination forms are held at Fairlight Post Office. The award will be presented by Janet Lutman at the Fairlight Assembly on 13 May.

Parish Assembly: The Fairlight annual Parish Assembly will be held on Friday 13 May at 6.30 pm at the Village Hall in The Broadway. All registered electors (i.e. just about all adult residents) are entitled to attend, raise issues and participate generally. In addition to anything raised by members of the public there will be a presentation of the landowner’s ideas for a nature reserve on land roughly opposite Fairlight Post Office and Stores, off Battery Hill and Pett Level Road. These ideas have already proved to be controversial, though there are as yet no firm proposals or formal planning applications.

The Assembly is a meeting of the electors, not of the Parish Council, but Parish Councillors will be present to answer questions and listen to residents’ views.

Fairlight Beacon: On 21 April about fifty hardy souls braved the cold wind to witness the lighting of the beacon. This was part of a series of beacon lightings around the country to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday. Many thanks to the volunteers who laid and lit the fire in on behalf of the Parish Council.

SPEAKERS CORNER: The AGM of Speakers Corner was held on 13th when members enjoyed an afternoon tea and a very tricky quiz devised by their secretary featuring questions from the past year’s talks. It certainly tested the members’ memories. The next season will start in October and the subscription for 12 talks is still only £9. Alan Sutton, the Chairman, thanked everybody for their support and said that the highlight of the season was the actor Tony Harris impersonating Henry 8th in all his glory.

TLC: The April meeting of the Tuesday Ladies Club was a celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and members were treated to a surprise afternoon tea. Everybody dressed in red, white and blue and the hall was decorated with Union flags. The speaker was a loyal ex policeman who had of course sworn an oath of allegiance to the Queen when he joined the force and he emphasised that is where the loyalty of the Police Force lays. Ian “Spike” Millington then gave an hilarious account of things that went wrong during his years of service.

The next meeting of TLC will be at the Village Hall on May 17th at 2.15pm and feature Bernard Cruttenden and his subject “A Sussex Posy”. Visitors very welcome for £2 admission which includes tea and cake.
