Fairlight

Church Matters: Just one service in the parish this weekend, and that’s the increasingly popular Informal Worship at 6.30 pm at St Peter’s. You are invited to go along and hear Dr Richard Scott, who is the newly appointed Head of Through Faith Missions. He is a GP who was reprimanded by the BMA for sharing his faith with a patient, and he has recently recovered from cancer treatment, following which he wrote ‘God – I’ve got Cancer’. Dr Scott will actually be speaking at the Benefice Service at St Mary and St Peter, Pett at 10.30 am before coming over to Fairlight in the early evening. Through Faith Missions is an experienced UK-based organisation that has led missions all over the UK and in Africa. Please take the opportunity to hear him.

Coffee, Cake & Consultation: In, and about, St Peter’s Church from 10.30 am to 12 noon tomorrow, Saturday, August 30. It has recently been confirmed that St Peter’s is viable as a building for a good few years yet, and this has given rise to two questions, ‘What would you do with St Peter’s if you had £35,000 to spend?’, and ‘what further role could St Peter’s Church play in our village? If you have any views to express, do go along and join in the discussions.

Today at MOPP’s: Celia King will be along with some chair-based exercises, to be followed by fish and chips and then trifle. Just as well it’s that way round.

Ride + Stride event: Will be taking place on Saturday, September 13, organised by the Sussex Historic Churches Trust. This trust gives grants to Sussex churches of historic interest which are in need of repair and, indeed, St Andrew’s benefited from a generous grant for the recent roof repairs.

Those participating in the Ride + Stride event are sponsored to visit any of the many open churches either on foot, by bike or on horseback, and the money raised is shared equally between the Trust and the participant’s church. This year St Andrew’s Church will be open from 9 am to 6 pm on the day, and it is hoped Fairlight will be able to sponsor a group to take part next year. If you’re curious and would like to know more, Dinah can help you on 813681.

Flicks in the Village: After August saw Flicks in the Village become Flicks in Abeyance, this thriving and popular society will be back in action with ‘The Railway Man’, the recent adaptation from Eric Lomax’ 1995 biographical book. The film’s cast is led by Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.

You vill attend this fonction!: The Residents Association has a treat lined up for Saturday, September 13, when Papa Schnitzel’s Oompah Band will be entertaining us in the village hall from 7.30 pm. This band has been here before, under the auspices of the Wine and Social Club, and a fantastically hilarious evening ensued. A word of warning – whatever you do, don’t mention the… Or the World Cup.

Knit and Natter: The group resumes its meetings on Wednesday next, September 3, meeting from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm (not the 2.30 pm finish some will have read!), and will be at Alison’s, which is Tamarisk Cottage in Shepherds Way. This will be venue for all meetings on both the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

No, not next Monday: But on the following Monday, September 8, the Wine and Social Club will be at their monthly meeting in the village hall starting at 7.30 pm. Their guest that evening will be Peter Snipe, with his tribute to Matt Monro whose early death at only 54 nevertheless left a large number of beautiful songs, beautifully sung. You’re in for a real treat!

The Gardening Club’s September meeting: comes up on Monday next, September 1, when the speaker will be Sally Botwright, presenting London Oddities 2, a follow up to her much appreciated talk (London Oddities 1) almost a year ago. All are looking forward to another host of interesting facts, features about, and photos of, The Smoke, as London was colloquially known in the ‘good old’ pea-souper days. The meeting commences at 2.30 pm in the village hall.

Photography in the Park: On Saturday week, September 6, the Friends of Hastings Country Park are organising this event to give you a chance of taking a close-up look at some of the fauna and flora to be found there, and to record what you’ve seen with your camera. Leading the way will be photographer and naturalist Crystal Ray, who will pass on some photographic tips. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 am.

Don’t hold your breath: If you’re eagerly anticipating the return of Activate’s activities, don’t hold your breath, ‘cos there’s still more than a week to go and you’ll be seriously gasping by the time it gets here. In fact, Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 September are the dates when things start running up to speed again once more.

The Royal British Legion: We’re coming up to that time of the year when everyone thinks about the British Legion, and the wonderful work they do. With the centenary of the start of World War 1 having just happened, the thinking will be deeper than usual this year. Yet the ‘RBL’ is there all the time, and our local branch has its meetings at the New Beach Club, Pett Level on the first Tuesday of each month, which makes the next one next Tuesday, September 2. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm. You’re sure of a warm welcome.
