Fairlight Village Voice

You can’t forget it now… We’ve been telling you about it for several weeks, so don’t forget to give the Village Hall Craft Fair a visit tomorrow, Saturday 16th from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.

There will be at least 8 tables for you inspect. Worth a visit, for sure!

Second bite at the cherry… The County Council will be having another go at trying to resolve the water seeping out through the road surface at the bottom end of Meadow Way, as the French drain installed, very quickly, earlier in the year has patently not cured the ill.

The works are planned to last from 25th October to 5th November, though the last episode was completed in four days, being cleared away even before Village Voice, warning of diversions, arrived on the Friday.

Very tasty… The Wine and Social Club had a happy evening for their October meeting on Monday last, with a wine tasting led by the knowledgeable Ken Lloyd.

Somewhere near half the membership attended, and they enjoyed and learned a good deal about half a dozen excellent but not bank-breaking wines.

What a wash out… Except that it wasn’t, because fortunately the wet weather cleared up!

That’s the Activate Car Wash last Thursday, which was brilliant - and they washed and valeted about 14 cars, in the process raising £80 for the food kitty for their forthcoming trip to Greece in 2 weeks time (of which more anon.)

The youngsters involved did a great job, washing, polishing and vacuuming while tea was served in the clubhouse and customers enjoyed a chat. It was so successful that, not surprisingly, they have had a request to do it all again!

Wendy Hatch and the workers say ‘thank you’ to all who came along. In a hardly deliberate mistake, due to a clumsy cut and paste job, we even told you last Friday to get your car done the day before!

What we should have said is that those with time machines can still nip back and get them cleaned - on Thursday 7th!

Riding high… Ken Hatch would like to say a big ‘thank you’ for all the support and sponsorship he received for his Great Glen Bike Ride in aid of ‘Christians Against Poverty.’ He raised £600!

Players need players… The Fairlight Players are right in the middle of their 60th Season, and their November offering, Ray Cooney’s Funny Money, looks as if it will make them still more friends than the considerable following their recent successes have found, expanding on a solid, devoted audience base.

But the projected play for next April, as the conclusion of their anniversary season, is to be the totally hilarious Not Now Darling, and the group is short of young ladies in their twenties and thirties from whom to select for two important roles.

Many local amateurs enjoy multiple memberships of several societies, and the Players are certainly not out to grab newcomers just for themselves, but if there are any performers who fancy working in a different environment, under a different director, where the standard is much higher than you might anticipate, they would be more than welcome if they’d like to make a ‘guest’ appearance in the village.

The group will soon find it difficult to select plays solely on the basis of their existing actor catchment.

Why not have a go? Please call the Secretary, Carol Ardley, on 814178 if you would like details of when and where they rehearse.

Any questions…? Yes, plenty. The Church in Fairlight will be running a Quiz Night in the Village Hall on Saturday, 16th October at 7.30 pm.

It’s only £3.50 each to be part of it, and you should take along your own drinks and snacks. Seating is to be at tables of six each. Feeling brainy?

Robberies resolved… The young person charged with the recent spate of walk-in burglaries in Fairlight Cove has appeared in court and pleaded ‘Guilty’.

The court imposed a community sentence with curfew, electronic tagging and strict supervision. And a timely reminder from the Police advises us to take the usual precautions against thefts and burglaries by locking doors, windows, sheds and ladders, by marking and photographing valuable items and by considering a burglar alarm.

New Parish Councillor The Parish Council offers a warm welcome to Jennifer Annetts on her co-option to Fairlight Parish Council.

New Councillor Jennifer has provided a little information about herself. Jennifer moved to the village with her husband and baby daughter in October 1988.

She taught in several Hastings schools as well at Guestling and Icklesham schools, finally retiring from teaching aged 61, in 2008 when Freda Gardham Primary closed and the new school was built in Rye.

Her hobbies include reading, writing poetry, gardening, and playing tennis and table tennis. Jennifer did her teacher training at a drama school, which is where she learnt her love of drama. As a family they became members of the Fairlight Pantomime Group shortly after their arrival in Fairlight.

Husband Harry’s piano skills were quickly recognised, while she took on the role of choreographer with daughter Libby a young dancer.

More recently she has directed three successful Pantomimes and hopes to do more in the future. Many will already be aware that Jennifer is Chair of the committee which ran the highly successful first Music & Arts Festival in Fairlight called Fairfest this August.

As a member of the Parish Council, she is delighted to have yet another opportunity to serve the Community of which she has been a part now for over 22 years.

Yes, Councillor… Still on the Parish Council, next May there will be elections for Councillors (on the same day as the referendum on the voting system etc).

Now is the time to give some thought to becoming a Parish Councillor. Any of the existing Councillors would be happy to give you more information – their contact details are on the Parish Council Notice Boards.
