Fairtrade at St Richards Community College

St Richard's pupils have been busy during Fairtrade Fortnight helping promote awareness through various activities.

Sainsbury's responded to an appeal by Chaplain Angela Brennan to support their campaign.

Two representatives came in and gave a talk to the Liturgy Reps from each form about Fairtrade and how it changes lives by supporting farmers and workers in developing countries.

On Friday March 6, pupils will be supporting the Fairtrade Foundation by joining in the biggest Fairtrade banana-eating record attempt by eating a Fairtrade banana between noon on Friday March 6 and noon on Saturday March 7.

Angela Brennan said: "Thanks to Sainsbury for their donation of four boxes of Fairtrade bananas towards our Banana Marathon effort.

During this week pupil have also been supporting CAFOD '“ (The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) who have asked schools all over England and Wales to take part in an eco-carnival fundraiser.

"Taking inspiration from Brazil, where carnivals and festivals have an important role in bringing communities together '“ pupils at St Richard's have been getting sponsorship to take part in activities during lunchtimes. These have included Music - drumming workshop, Brazilian Art workshop, Language - Portuguese speaking pupils at the school have helped to prepare a workshop to teach Portuguese phrases and to sample Portuguese food. There is also a dance workshop where pupils could learn to Samba."

On Friday, CAFOD's Lent Fast Day will begin with Mass in the school's Chapel at 8am followed by a Fairtrade breakfast of bananas, cereal bars, hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Pupils will be raising money during the day through sponsored activities and loose change collections in their form CAFOD boxes.
