Fairtrade Fortnight pupils in banana-eating challenge

PUPILS at St Peter and St Paul CE Primary School went bananas as part of their support for Fairtrade Fortnight.

One-hundred-and-eighty-one pupils, staff and parents took part in the challenge and brought in their own Fairtrade bananas as part of the attempt to break the world record for the largest number of people eating a Fairtrade banana at the same time.

Joshua Ruane, pupil and school press officer, wrote to the Observer to outline other events the school had been involved with to get involved in Fairtrade Fortnight.

As well as the banana-eating marathon, he pointed out the children had:

'¢ Set up a steering group: the PPFA (St Peter and St Paul Fairtrade Actioners)

'¢ Written a Fairtrade policy

'¢ Raffled a Fairtrade Easter egg

'¢ Organised a trail

'¢ Run a quiz and poster competition

'¢ Written letters to various organisations (East Sussex County Council, local supermarkets etc)

Joshua said, "We have done this because we feel Fairtrade is important to a lot of people at the school as a way of obtaining a fair price for products grown and harvested in the developing world.

"Through our efforts we hope to gain the Fairtrade Mark for the school."
