Faitrade pioneers welcome Indian visitors

A business which pioneered the sale of Fairtrade cotton clothes welcomed VIP visitors from India.

Vericott Ltd, which runs Gossypium, the Cotton Store, in Lewes High Street, held its first shareholders meeting in the Town Hall on May 27.

The shareholders are part of an ethical council within the company who also includes Agrocel Pure and Fair Cotton a Mumbai-based company which has 12 centres all over India and makes use of the skills and materials of a host of small-scale rural farmers.

Abigail Petit, the co-founder of Gossypium, said: 'Not many people know it but thanks to the people of Lewes cotton farmers on the other side of the world are looking forward to a very different future.

'Our business also helped to inspire M&S to move to Fairtrade cotton with knock on positive results for 10,000 's of small scale Indian cotton farmers working on the poverty line.'

The shareholders meeting discussed how the company should market cotton at fair prices for the Indian growers.
