Fake policeman tried to break into home

The hunt is on for a bogus policeman who tried to break into a home in Middleton.

His image was released by the police after a 93-year-old woman was targeted in her property in Ashmere Lane.

The suspected burglar claimed to be a police officer when he knocked on her door and entered her home. He told her he had caught youths breaking into the building.

But the feisty woman challenged him and asked him to leave. He reluctantly went along with her.

She described the intruder as being smartly dresssed, aged in his 30s and about 5ft 10in tall. He had short light brown hair and wore a navy coloured jacket.

The incident happened at 4.10pm on November 17 but police have only now released the CD-fit image.

DC Pippa Hannard from Bognor CID is appeaking for witnesses who may have been in the area around the time the incident to contact her on 01243 843433.
