Falmer

SWEET MUSIC: We have the first concert of the new season here at St. Laurence Church this Saturday (tomorrow). The music will be provided by the Jarika Trio of flautists. Richard Goodman, Karen Rash and Jasmine Selby will entertain us with music to include Tcherepnin Trio for Flutes, works by Jack Jordan and Boismortier and traditional Irish and English arrangements. I for one am looking forward to it. The concert starts at 6.30pm, later than usual. We will have wine and soft drinks available, parking is easy (and free) and admission free with a retiring collection.

NOT SO SWEET MUSIC: Talking of music, there was a concert in Stanmer Park last Saturday which had an unexpected effect on Falmer North. The whole of that side of the village was parked up, not a space to be seen. Fortunately I wasn’t going out. If I had been, I certainly wouldn’t have found a space when I got back. The other downside was the rubbish we found strewn around on Sunday morning, burger boxes, bottles, paper cups, gas canisters and balloons and dodgy looking empty sachets. The street looked awful. I hope we can get protection from this invasion next time they have an event at Stanmer.

PELHAM COTTAGES: No 2 Pelham Cottages in Mill Street is being refurbished at the moment, and the Falmer Almshouse Trust is seeking a new resident for the property which has been empty since the sad passing of Peter Herbert. The refurbishment and decorating is due for completion in mid-October and the Trust is inviting applicants who are over the age of 55, who live in the Parish of Falmer or who have been associated with the village. The Trust will give priority to applicants who meet this criteria and who they feel are of the greatest need. The cottage is available in return for a maintenance contribution to be agreed. If you feel you are suitable and wish to apply you should write stating you suitability by Monday September 26 to the Secretary of the Trust, Mrs S Taylor, Downlands, Swanborough Farm, Swanborough, Lewes BN7 3PF Tel: 01273 438296 mob: 07900272655

PETS AND HARVEST: If you have a pooch or other pet you may like to come to the Pet Blessing service at St Laurence Church on October 1 at noon. I have always had something else on when this service takes place but I do hope to go this year. I think it sounds fun. Mostly dogs have attended in the past but there is nothing to stop you bringing your pet gerbil, rabbit, rat or mouse. All are welcome. The following day October 2 we have our Harvest Festival thanksgiving at 10am, again, everyone is very welcome. The service is followed by a Harvest lunch, please let us know if you would like to attend.
