LADIES GROUP: Falmer Ladies' Group met for their September meeting with an interesting and informative talk given by Ian Everest on The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It is a poignant story to listen how Sir Fabian Ware, who was too old to fight in the 1914-18 war was saddened by the numbers of soldiers dying with no records of where they died or buried. Sir Fabian, through the British Red Cross, with his unit began recording and caring for all the graves they could find. It was the vision and determination of this one man that the War Graves are, today, a testimony and witness to the men who lost their lives at this time. Ian urged those of us who have not yet been able, to make a visit to the War Grave cemeteries in Belgium and France. Next month on, October 11, we are looking forward to yet another interesting evening when Eric Huxham will be coming to talk about Farming in Falmer in the Fifties. Although called a Ladies group men are always welcome.

AUTUMN: Summer has gone, and we have already said goodbye to the house martins and too goodbye to young students who have been living in Falmer for the past two years and now are moving on to continue their studies elsewhere, or to work elsewhere. I always say hello to those walking by the house if I am in the garden, and I was touched when three of these young people came personally to say farewell. I am conscious of the age gap between us and do not wish to intrude, but when they came they made me realise that they miss home and a friendly greeting meant so much to them; so I will still greet people and urge others to do the same, it costs nothing.

CONCERT: The first concert of the season in St Laurence Church takes place on Saturday September 24 at 6.30pm. The Jarika Trio will be performing with Richard Goodman, Karen Rash, Jasmine Selby (flutes) music to include Tcherepnin Trio for Flutes, works by Jack Jordan and Boismortier and traditional Irish and English arrangements. Entrance is free with a retiring collection.
