MUSIC: We were treated to a wonderful concert last Saturday. I had just arrived back from a holiday but was determined to go and enjoy the music and I am so glad I did. Flautists Caroline Collingridge and Carol Alderson played music by composers Franz Doppler, Poulenc, Grieg and Adrienne Albert accompanied on the piano by John Bruzon. The music was sublime and the performers so talented, it was a very fitting end to this 2015/16 Recital series. The next series will commence in September. Keep a look out for details of the coming concerts.

ORDINATION: A group of us from St. Laurence Church travelled up to London last Sunday to support Jeffrey Lake as he was ordained as a priest. Jeff was one of four candidates and the service was very moving and enjoyable as one saw the dedication and excitement on the faces of the candidates as they entered this new phase of their calling. The church, St. Stephens in Rochester Row, was very welcoming and much more similar to what we are used to than our last expedition to see Jeff ordained as a Deacon in St Paul’s Cathedral, which was an awe inspiring and wonderful occasion.

FLOWER FESTIVAL: The big news this week is the Flower Festival. Taking place this weekend; tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday, from 11am to 5pm. There will be flower arrangements in St. Laurence Church on the theme On the Box, these are bound to be excellent and members of the public can vote for their favourites. In the village hall there will be stalls, including hand-made cards, books, tombola, bric-a-brac, clothes and, of course, home-made cakes and tea. Weather permitting there will be stalls outside in the hall garden and games for the children. Do come along and support us.

DUCKLINGS?: I am not sure if my eyes deceived me, but I think we have a brood of ducklings on the pond, I do hope so. It is so depressing to see ducklings appear and then get picked off by the various predators around on the pond (gulls, terrapins and possibly rats attracted by leftover bread that people have fed to the ducks). It is worth saying it once again, bread is not good for the ducks or the pond. It is much better to bring grain or vegetables. Apparently one of their favourite foods is iceberg lettuce. The ducks will eat the bread you give them, in the same way that we would eat chocolate, but unfortunately they don’t know when to stop. Talking of the pond, I counted about 43 Greylag geese floating on it last Sunday.
