Falmer

CONCERTS: On Saturday we were wonderfully entertained by three young musicians from the East Sussex Academy of Music. Natasza Pomorska's (soprano) voice filled the church, and thrilled the audience, Katie Warren's (clarinet) rendition of works by Brahms, Devienne and Finzi showed her amazing talent and lastly but far from least, Harry Plant (trumpet) played a concerto by Alexander Arjunjan, his performance left us all with respect for this young man's talent. A great concert and our thanks go to these young performers and we wish them well in their future musical careers. They should go far. The next concert at Falmer in St Laurence Church at 5.30pm will yet again be young musicians from Roedean School. This concert will take place on Saturday April 23. These music scholars from Roedean always manage to thrill us with their youth and versatility. Do not miss.

EXHIBITION: Whilst sitting listening to delightful music you can cast your eyes around the church to see the wonderful art work displayed on the walls for the exhibition, Easter Fires. Every time I enter the church it is a thrill to see even more detail that was missed on the last visit. Again if you haven’t yet seen the exhibition it is on every weekend until the first weekend in May from 11am to 5pm.

PETER HERBERT: Last week we said farewell to Peter Herbert who was a resident of one of our Almshouses. Peter died quite suddenly, but it was evident from the turnout at the Woodvale Chapel that he was a well-loved man. The service was a celebration of his life and those who spoke of him with such love and affection made us cry andlaugh. He will be missed by all of his family, friends and neighbours and as the family said ‘with love and pride’.

FOR SALE: Another sad moment of remembrance, is the For Sale sign on the gate to Park Farm. We live directly opposite this 10 acre field and have watched over the years, Dennis, who used to farm the land and then let the fields out for pasture, and died over two years ago. It has been an ongoing battle for the family to try to keep the land and to renew the lease, but Brighton and Hove Council, who own the land, have refused to let the family renew the lease and now it is on the market for sale. Living so close we are, understandably, concerned as to what the land might be used for.
